Reports say fighting in the area is continuing. An international team of researchers from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Animals or CITES says nearly 35,000 elephants have been killed for their ivory each year. And that if the rate of poaching doesn't slow down, the species could be wiped out in the foreseeable future.
